IOT SOLUTION IN A SWISS DISTRICT HEATING NETWORK
I have an overview of my district heating network at all times and our customers can concentrate on saving energy.
A Swiss district heating company wants to consolidate its market position whilst continously optimizing its infrastructure. To achieve this, the company relies on an IoT solution from the Switzercloud.
The installed Landis & Gyr heat meters get an upgrade. A LoRaWAN© plug-in module is retrofitted in the meter . Using a smartphone, the installation and commissioning is done in a few minutes. The meter then periodically sends the current measured data to the Switzercloud, where it is processed and forwarded to the heating provider in the desired billing system format. With the addition of these outdoor gateways the Switzercloud network is further densified helping to realize the Swiss Internet of Things.
Thanks to the Switzercloud and its integrated visualization system, the suppliers end-customers can view and understand their energy data clearly and in the desired detail.

To begin with, a clever idea was employed by the customer to test the range needed to remotely read the LoRaWAN© heat meters. More difficult locations were chosen, ie those that were not in good reception areas. The results were a pleasant surprise, as most locations were easily reached.
After that, an interface was made linking the Switzercloud and the customer's billing system.
In the summer of 2019, the next 200 modules will be registered on the Switzercloud and integrated into the heat meters on site. Other municipalities will follow. In this project, the energy meter reading process will be digitized step by step. As a nice added benefit, any meter issues will now be detected earlier.
